About the winemaker: Laïa Esmel and Jaume Vilaseca are up-and-coming young winemakers crafting serious sparkling wine in the Penedès, the famous Cava-producing region in the hills high above Barcelona overlooking the Mediterranean.

Their CasaJou project is setting the standard for a new, youth-driven movement in the Penedès focused on “Mediterranean sparkling wines,” not Cava. Laïa and Jaume choose not to take the Cava appellation as they don’t want to be associated with the image of industrial, low-cost bubbly often made with imported Champagne varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Promoting local varieties and isolating single vineyards in the wooded hills above the traditional Penedès production plain, they are making serious, exceptional sparkling wines.
